Head of the Unit

Dr. Pere-Joan Cardona Iglesias is the head of the Unitat de Tuberculosi Experimental of the Institut Germans Trias i Pujol (IGTP) since it was founded in 1997. Born in Manresa (Catalonia) on 1967, he obtained his Medical Degree on 1992 and his PhD in 1999, both in the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Devoted to the study of the Latent Tuberculosis Infection, mainly through animal experimentation, he stands out to always trying to integrate new concepts and disciplines to imagine original approaches to understand and manage both the M.tuberculosis infection and the active disease (tuberculosis). Thus he proposed a new hypothesis (the Dynamic Hypothesis) to explain the Latent Tuberculosis Infection, in order to integrate the physiological and clinical human disease and the pathological and microbiologic aspects of the M.tuberculosis. He is also the coinventor of the antituberculous vaccine RUTI®, owning 7 patents related to it, and was the Chief Scientific Officer and Chief Medical Officer of its development in the biopharmaceutical company named Archivel Farma sl. Recently he has founded another spin off from the IGTP: Manremyc sl, devoted to the develoment of a new probiotic to prevent active TB.
